The Old Testament accounting of dates and times are less accurate as those of today's calendars. Today we use the solar calendar (365 ¼ days in a year) while the Old Testament (and Revelation) used the lunar calendar ( 360 days in a year). The solar calendar has many obstacles itself, such as leap years and the Gregorian reform of 1572 AD. The lunar calendar, in trying to fix dates and times, is even more complex due to the inaccuracy and discrepancy between the two systems of time calculations. (a month was added to the lunar calendar every few years to keep in alignment with the solar cycle). Although extensive study and research has been done to equalize and bring into sync these two time recording systems, there may be close approximations of times and events recorded and listed due to the inaccuracies between the two, but are as accurate as to the knowledge we have of these events and people's life spans as expressed in the Bible. The time periods of the Kings of Israel and Judah are especially hard to pinpoint due to overlapping reigns, alternate names used of the same person and use of relationships such as father, son and grandfather. These things are taken into consideration when fixing dates for each king's particular reign in time. |
